Volvo XC40 vs. Lexus UX

  • The XC40 features an available T5 powertrain that comes equipped with all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive isn't even an option on the Lexus UX.
  • The XC40 features two engine options: T4 (187 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque) and T5 (248 horsepower; 258 pound-feet of torque). The Lexus UX has just one, and it's woefully underpowered (169 horsepower; 151 pound-feet of torque).
  • The XC40's infotainment touchscreen is two inches bigger than the screen in the UX.
  • The XC40 offers standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Lexus UX only offers Apple CarPlay.
  • Rear seat passengers will feel much more comfortable in the XC40. Compared to the UX, it offers three more inches of both legroom and headroom and four more inches of rear shoulder room.
  • With its lower load floor, lower lift-over height, fold-flat rear seats, and ski pass-thru, the XC40's cargo area is more versatile than that of the UX. The XC40 offers more small-item storage options, and there's even a removable trash bin.
  • The XC40's voice control system is easier to use and responds better to conversational speech. The system on the UX isn't as intuitive.

Volvo XC40 vs. Lexus NX

  • While it gets a lot closer than its UX sibling, the NX's only engine still falls 13 horsepower short of the XC40's T5 powerplant.
  • Despite being paired with all-wheel drive, the XC40's more powerful engine still gets better fuel economy than the NX. The XC40 achieves EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. The NX is close behind at 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined.
  • The XC40 comes standard with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Like the UX, the NX only offers Apple CarPlay. And the touchscreen is only 8 inches.
  • Although the NX is a larger vehicle, the XC40 offers more cargo space. With all seats in place, the XC40 has 20.7 cubic feet of cargo room, and the NX has just 17.7 cubic feet.
  • With the rear seats folded down, the XC40 offers 57.5 cubic feet, and the NX offers 54.6 cubic feet.

Volvo XC40 vs. Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

  • Mercedes-Benz discontinued the 45 trim, so the GLA-Class has just one engine option. When the GLA and XC40 are similarly equipped, the XC40 produces 40 more horsepower while achieving the same fuel economy ratings.
  • The XC40 features standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. To get these on the GLA, you need to add an extra package.
  • Both the XC40 and GLA offer automatic emergency braking as standard equipment. However, the XC40's system features pedestrian, cyclist, and large animal detection. Lane departure warning and mitigation and automatic high beams are included on the base XC40 trim. The features are tied up in various options packages on the GLA.
  • The XC40 is a little roomier upfront, with slightly more shoulder, head, and legroom.
  • The XC40 is much roomier in the back with 9 inches more legroom, three inches more shoulder room, and nearly four inches more headroom.
  • The XC40 offers better utility, exceeding the GLA's maximum cargo capacity by 14 cubic feet.
