What purpose do hoses perform in a car’s engine?

Many question why car engine hoses are made of flexible materials. Since each car manufacturer appears to design different configurations to hoses, why not make the connections rigid so that it does not wear? One of the natural occurrences in autos is their propensity to flex. When connecting one part to another, gaskets are used to absorb the force of that flex.

The two radiator hoses are anchored to different parts of the car’s structure. When one piece flexes, the other part may flex in a different direction. Such is the nature of large units encountering mixed forces. If the connections between the radiator and the engine were static, they would crack from the flex forces coming from different directions. The only answer is to use flexible hoses to connect the two parts.

At Crippen Volvo Cars in Lansing, we check your hoses for signs of wear during every oil service.
